Leading With the Heart: How I Was Able to Hear God’s Whisper and Reinvent After 50

For a long time, I used to feel a sense of frustration when my friends would say things like, "God told me this" or "God spoke to me." I hadn’t had that kind of direct experience and often wondered why it wasn’t happening for me. But through note-taking while listening to calming music on my free Spotify account, I’ve come to realize that God was speaking to me all along—just in a different way. For me, God speaks through patterns.

Patterns are all around us, but we often miss them if we’re not paying attention.

Journaling serves a purpose, while note-taking serves as the process when it’s converted into a tangible outcome. Journaling isn't meant for the future. It's for your own reflection, your own clarity. Notes are also for clarity and decision making but are really meant for future reference. Combining both has been a powerful tool in helping me remember and to see these patterns more clearly over time.

As I reflect on my thoughts, emotions, and experiences, during the past six or more years, I’ve begun to see how certain situations or feelings repeat themselves, generally three times. That's when I recognized this isn't coincidental! These patterns, most often coming from random strangers, are God’s way of whispering to me, nudging me toward reflection, change, and growth in specific areas of my life.

The Importance of Stillness in My Process

One key thing I’ve learned is that stillness is crucial for me in this process. I used to think I could tune into these whispers while I was driving, or multitasking—but that didn’t work. It wasn’t until I set aside time to sit quietly and be present that I started to recognize the patterns and hear what God was trying to tell me.

This quiet, intentional time allows me to become fully aware of these subtle messages. It's in these calm moments that I notice the patterns in my thoughts, behaviors, and emotions, and how they are a form of communication. Without making time for stillness, I would have continued to miss the opportunities for growth that these patterns offer. It didn't take long after the recognition that I realized how specific the patters had become. I knew documenting them would forever change my life in meaningful ways!

Notetaking as a Tool for Heart-Led Change

By recording these patterns through note-taking, I’ve been able to make conscious, heart-led changes in my life. Whether it’s expanding my mindset, creating healthier habits, or being more in tune with my emotions, this practice has been a powerful catalyst for my personal and professional reinvention after 50. These patterns aren’t coincidences—they're God’s way of speaking to me, empowering me to evolve and to willingly create the next phase of my life with clarity, boldness and newfound purpose.

If you’re feeling unsure or hesitant about how to move forward in your own life, I encourage you to start note-taking. Take the time to sit still, reflect on your experiences, and pay attention to any patterns that emerge. You may be surprised at the insights you uncover—and how much change is possible once you start to listen, followed by taking intention action.
