“Four Ways to Reset Your Leadership When Life Throws Curveballs after Divorce or Caregiving”

Though she was only 5’2”, I still remember it like it was yesterday. Pretending I was asleep, I watched and listened as my mother’s short legs moved with rapid precision every Saturday at dawn, from the onset of spring through the humid summers Cincinnati is known to have.

Though I knew the ritual very well, I always kept hope alive that I might be permitted to sleep later or arise to watch cartoons like I imagined other kids my age did on Saturday mornings. My youthful mind couldn’t comprehend that awakening early to do chores was meaningful.

What I didn’t appreciate then about time management became a skill later in my life. Perfection wasn’t the goal; consistency was.

My name is Licia Thompson. I’m a certified Leadership Reinvention Strategist and published author of “When Your Soul Whisper’s: Strategies for leaders to redefine values and move forward after life’s transitions.”

The aftermath of the effects of divorce or caregiving often manifests in grief, uncertainties, or unresolved stress. To minimize the blowback, learning to create new time-efficient habits can be the turning point you need.

Here are four things I did to create new habits and increase my resilience after divorce and providing caregiving:

I REVISITED what I was taught in my youth by my mother about time management. Commitment to specific routines helps you allocate time to essential tasks, reducing the need to make decisions about what to do next. This reduces distractions and increases focused productivity by allocating specific blocks of time for a better work and life existence.

CONSISTENCY with certain weekly routines creates predictable outcomes, reducing stress and anxiety because you know what to expect and can plan accordingly.  Commitment to this also eliminates procrastination.

PRIORITIZING what really matters to you can include specific time for meal planning, exercise, and fun with friends and other relationships. All of this can lead to improved physical and mental well-being.

RESTRUCTURING FINANCIAL PLANNING can increase your ability to invest, which may have been impacted by divorce or caregiving. Making appropriate changes now can benefit you overall.

How much effort are you willing to put into committing to treating your future like an investment in yourself?
